Saturday got off to an exciting start with a trip to the saw mill, where I picked-up some beautiful pieces of Oak in order to make a garden bench. Here they are in the boot of the car, where they had to stay because I needed to head to Southwell to attend an artists trail at a friends farm, where he runs The Hop Barn. Anyway, here’s the Oak awaiting removal and the first bits of preparation!

After taking the motorbike to Southwell we visited The Hop Barn and did the artists trail, which involved a walk round the farm perimiter to see installations that various artists had put in place…
Obviously, Henry the Dalmatian had to photobomb a few of the shots!
After the tour we returned to another very exciting part of the day, to do some wood turning! A friend had donated a couple of pieces of Elm for me to use in a project, so as one of the pieces was fairly deep I decided to attempt a bowl. I’d done the prep earlier in the week, but the lathe belt had snapped so I wasn;t able to do any turning. However, my Father-in-Law got a replacement belt fitted so I was able to attempt my first ever turning project.
Here’s where we got to…

Other than the slight imperfection in the foot I’m very happy with it, so the next step will be to hollow-out the interior and then treat the wood with oil and a final polish finish.
I’m hoping to get back on the case in the next couple of weeks, so watch this space!
