I’m playing catch-up after a week that seems to have flown by!
Monday saw me an Henry start the day with a beautiful walk around Ketton Quarries, which is partly still a working quarry and partly a site of special scientific interest. That makes it a varied and very beautiful place to walk…
You can still seen some remnants of the way the quarry worked in the past, using large iron buckets (moved via a cable system) to move stone that was mainly removed by manual labour… very different to the machines and techniques used today.
The would originally have been a steam locomotive and track system to move the stone around the quarry floor, but although those days are long gone there’s an excellent Rocks by Rail museum in Oakham where you can see some working steam locos in action and learn about how they were used.
I’ll be writing about that in more detail in a future post, as that’s on my bucket list!
Henry also enjoyed his walk and with Autumn upon us the leaves have some beautiful colours…

The rest of the day was spent catching-up on some admin, such as a proposal for a kitchen makeover for a friend, plus getting ready for a couple of days away. The good news is that we finally got the correct bifold doors fitted to our barn conversion…
Then is was time to light the log burner and get cosy for an evening in…

All in all some really nice highlights!
